1994 Broadway Revival

Rodgers & HammersteinCarousel

After a tremendous return to the West End, Nicholas Hytner’s National Theatre production of Carousel made its way to Broadway under the auspices of Lincoln Center Theatre at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, starring Sally Murphy as Julie Jordan, Michael Hayden reprising his role as Billy from the previous London run, and Audra McDonald, who won her first Tony Award for her portrayal of Carrie Pipperidge. Also appearing in ensemble roles were the now recognizable Brian d’Arcy James and, making his Broadway debut as the Policeman, Taye Diggs. This Broadway revival of Carousel swept the Tony Awards in 1994, winning all five of its nominations, including Best Revival, Best Direction, Best Choreography and Best Scenic Design of a Musical.
