1929 London

Roughly six months after opening on Broadway, The New Moon made its London premiere at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on April 4, 1929. Directed by Felix Edwardes, with choreography by Bobby Connolly, the production starred Howett Worster and Evelyn Laye. Reviews were mixed, with the Times noting that “the story matters a great deal less than the songs and dances,” and the London Morning Post praising Evelyn Laye’s singing of “One Kiss,” “a song which bears repetition better than any other in the piece.” The London Observer called the performance “a very long sitting” and The Era, despite calling the show “about as silly as anything that America has sent to this country,” declared it “nevertheless, a fine spectacle.” The production played 147 performances, closing on August 10, 1929.
