Something Good

Music and Lyrics by Richard Rodgers

As the Captain and Maria confess their unexpected love to each other, they quietly agree that their good fortune is due to having done “Something Good” in their pasts.

Written by Richard Rodgers alone for the 1965 film, “Something Good” is a beautiful, quiet duet for Maria and the Captain. Replacing “An Ordinary Couple” from the Broadway version, this song was written with Julie Andrews in mind specifically. In the film it is shot in nighttime silhouette – it was the last song filmed by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer – because the visual effect desired by director Robert Wise required specific Klieg lights that, when lit, made a terribly unfortunate, flatulent sound. Apparently, the noise had Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in such a fit of giggles that Wise decided to backlight them so as to not catch any of their smiles on camera. This happy accident provided the lovely, warm effect used in the film’s final cut.

"Something Good" Lyrics

Perhaps I had a wicked childhood,
Perhaps I had a miserable youth,
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past,
There must have been a moment of truth.

For here you are standing there loving me
Whether or not you should.
So, somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good.

Nothing comes from nothing,
Nothing ever could.
So, somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good.

For here you are standing there loving me
Whether or not you should.
So, somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good.

Nothing comes from nothing,
Nothing ever could.
So, somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something...
Something good.
