Falling in Love with Love

Lyrics By Lorenz Hart  Music By Richard Rodgers

Aching with loneliness due to the absence of her husband, Antipholus of Ephesus, Adriana ruefully reflects on her love life.

First sung by Muriel Angelus in the 1938 Broadway premiere of The Boys from Syracuse, “Falling in Love with Love” became an American standard. Notable recordings include renditions by Helen Merrill, Dinah Shore, Vic Damone, Anita O’Day, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, The Supremes and Jessye Norman. In 1997, Bernadette Peters, playing Cinderella’s stepmother, sang the song in ABC television’s broadcast of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

“Falling in Love with Love” LYRICS

Adriana:
I weave with brightly colored strings
To keep my mind off other things;
So, ladies, let your fingers dance,
And keep your hands out of romance.

Lovely witches,
Let the stitches
Keep your fingers under control.
Cut the thread but leave
Your whole heart whole.

Marry maids can sew and sleep.
Wives can only sew and weep!

Falling in love with love
Is falling for make believe.
Falling in love with love
Is playing the fool.

Caring too much is such
A juvenile fancy.
Learning to trust is just
For children in school.

I fell in love with love
One night when the moon was full.
I was unwise with eyes
Unable to see.

I fell in love with love
With love everlasting,
But love fell out with me.

Luciana & Ladies:
Falling in love with love
Is falling for make believe.
Falling in love with love
Is playing the fool.

Caring too much is such
A juvenile fancy.
Learning to trust is just
For children in school.

Adriana:
I fell in love with love
One night when the moon was full.
I was unwise with eyes
Unable to see.

I fell in love with love
With love everlasting
But love fell out with me!
